Israel says it will begin direct negotiations with Lebanon as US prepares for Iran ceasefire talks

 Status of ceasefire: The two-week ceasefire deal appears to be largely holding, with fewer attacks reported across the region today. A US delegation will go to Pakistan for talks beginning Saturday.

• In Lebanon: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will begin direct talks with Lebanon on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations between the two countries. A Lebanese official told CNN there will be “no negotiations under fire.”

• US role: Sources say President Donald Trump asked Netanyahu to seek the talks with Lebanon. Iran has been at odds with the US and Israel over whether the ceasefire applies to Israel’s military offensive targeting the Iranian-backed paramilitary group at its northern border.

• Strait of Hormuz: Only a handful of vessels have been allowed to pass through the crucial waterway since the ceasefire announcement. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz is another critical sticking point in the tenuous ceasefire agreement.
